The American firm of Hammerman Brothers was founded in New York in 1946 by Benjamin, Hyman and Bernard Hammerman.
Hammerman, founded as Hammerman Bros. in the mid-1940s, is a well-known manufacturer of fine jewelry. The New York-based firm produces jewelry made using precious metals, diamonds, and colored gemstones. For more than seventy-five years, members of the Hammerman family have overseen the firm.
Hammerman Bros. Jewelry - History Benjamin, Bernard, and Hyman Hammerman founded Hammerman Bros. in 1946 after serving during World War II. All three brothers worked in the diamond district in New York before the war. Using that experience, they eventually established their own diamond and casting divisions, thus expanding their workshop. This move brought more of their material sourcing and jewelry production in-house.
One of the firm‘s achievements in the early 1950s was Benjamin Hammerman‘s patented design that combined a watch with a fancy bracelet for women‘s evening wear. Over the next decade, he designed a collection of elegant diamond bracelet watches with a hinged element covering the timepiece. Hammerman Bros. also manufactured gold bracelets for the Bulova Accutron watch line in the 1960s, including a distinct one presented to President Dwight Eisenhower.
The firm has taken many commissions for special-order jewelry over its time in business. For example, it produced one notable pair of custom earrings for comedian Totie Fields in the 1970s. The company has also dealt in rare gemstones, one of which was a 25.5-carat heart-shaped diamond featured in a Tiffany & Co. ad campaign during the 1980s.
Now known as Hammerman, the firm is still family operated. The business continues to market an array of fine and high jewelry manufactured in their New York workshop using precious metals and gemstones.
Designs manufactured by Hammerman Bros. vary widely in style. They often feature intricate metalwork using 18-karat yellow or white gold or platinum. Many are pieces have tightly packed pavé-set stones. These range from fanciful panda bear pin clips created with black and white diamonds to more traditional freeform earrings and rings. In addition to diamonds, the firm‘s other frequently used gemstones are emeralds, rubies, tourmalines, crystals, and sapphires. The featured stones are typically cut small and round, but the firm has made several pieces with baguette-cut stones and larger cabochons.
While Hammerman Bros. is known for colorful diamond and gemstone jewelry, it has also produced many all-metal designs. Some of the most desirable of these pieces are delicate link necklaces. Other equally attractive items to fine jewelry collectors have a smattering of small diamond and gemstone accents.
Hammerman Bros. Jewelry - Marks Hammerman Bros. has stamped its jewelry with an "HB" monogram. The letters share a crossbar, and the right arm of the "H" forms the back of the "B." This jeweler‘s pieces are also marked to indicate the metal content, usually 18-karat gold (expressed as "18K" or "750") or platinum. Some items also have a mark indicating they were designed in France. Occasionally, collectors find pieces that still have a Hammerman hangtag attached as well.
