Centering a round faceted ruby weighing approx. 1.15ct., flanked by Round Brilliant cut diamonds weighing approx. 0.10ctw., fashioned in platinum. Circa 1950. Size 6 3/4.
Ruby was greatly valued by ancient Hindus, who believed an inextinguishable flame burned inside the stone. It is not much of a stretch given that rubies can display fluorescence to visible light, causing them to glow in daylight. Some can even phosphoresence to other wavelengths of light, causing them to glow after the light is removed and even in the dark.
